NorthEast United FC (NEUFC) has re-signed one of its last year’s star performers — Nicolas Velez — for the third season of the Hero Indian Super League.

The 26-year-old Argentinian was the top scorer for the Highlanders last year with five goals.

NEUFC owner John Abraham expressed his delight at having Velez back in the team for the second successive season.

“I think I can on behalf of our entire team state that we are very pleased to have him back. Nico is a crowd favourite and is someone who has people on their edge of their seats whenever he is on the ball. We hope that he will up his game this season and give us many reasons to celebrate,” he said.

NEUFC’s Director of Football, Ardeshir Jeejeebhoy echoed John’s sentiments, saying: “I think Nico needs no introduction when it comes to our fans. His pace, eye for goal and work ethic are assets for the Club. We have high hopes from him and are confident that he will take his game up a notch this season.”

Evoking celebrations amongst the fans of NEUFC with the announcement of his return to the Club, Velez exhibited reciprocatory happiness.

“Sometimes in life sad moments happen and they are not in our control, especially last year after being close to the play-offs... but football is an amazing and beautiful game and never ceases to surprise us. I’m very happy to come back and be a member of the NorthEast United FC family once again.”

Velez also acknowledged the role that the fans played in his decision to return to the Club.

“A heartfelt thank you to all of you fans. I always read your messages. I love how you support me and am humbled by your wishes to watch me play in your team. I am really happy to come back to a place where I always feel at home and I hope we can bring happiness to all of you this season.”
