Irrepressible Djokovic joins 700 club in Dubai

Novak Djokovic achieved yet another remarkable feat on Wednesday when he secured the 700th singles victory of his career by beating Malek Jaziri in the second round of the Dubai Tennis Championships.

The world number one became only the 12th player in the Open Era to join the 700 club when he eased to a 6-1 6-2 success against wildcard Jaziri in just an hour and five minutes.

The world number one became only the 12th player in the Open Era to join the 700 club when he eased to a 6-1 6-2 success against wildcard Jaziri in just an hour and five minutes.

Djokovic only reached the milestone of 600 wins in November 2014 and has taken just 479 days to rack up another century after losing just six matches since then to join Roger Federer (1,067) and Rafael Nadal (775) as the only active players to reach the 700 mark.

The irrepressible Serb can equal Ivan Lendl's record of reaching 18 consecutive finals this week and is also eyes an eighth consecutive title - having won the Australian Open last time out. 

Four-time Dubai Tennis Championships winner Djokovic was unsurprisingly a class apart from world number 121 Jaziri, who showed great character to save 12 of 16 break points but was soundly beaten.

There were some uncharacteristic errors from the top seed as he failed to take five break-point opportunities in a lengthy first game of the second set, but made light work of setting up a quarter-final against Feliciano Lopez. 

Tomas Berdych will get the opportunity to gain revenge over Nick Kyrgios after the third seed proved to be too strong for qualifier Thomas Fabbiano.

Berdych was beaten by Kyrgios in the semi-finals of the Marseille Open last week and will come face to face with the Australian again after 6-2 6-2 win over Fabbiano.

Kyrgios, who went on to win his first ATP World Tour title in southern France, defeated Mikhail Kukushkin 6-3 6-2.

In-form Fourth seed Roberto Bautista Agut needed only 54 minutes to thrash Korean teenager Hyeon Chung 6-0 6-1 to book a last-eight match against Marcos Baghdatis, who saw off Vasek Pospisil in straight sets.

Lopez, seeded six, was a 6-3 7-6 (9-7) winner over Lukas Rosol, while eighth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber advanced at the expense of Borna Coric.
