Vinesh Phogat

Vinesh Phogat's story is one of the biggest comebacks of 2018 in Indian sports.

A cousin of the famous Phogat sisters, Vinesh overcame the career threatening leg injury in Rio Olympics and another injury during training last year to re-establish herself successfully by winning medals in big-ticket events in 2018.

The 24-year-old from Bhiwani district of Haryana won a silver medal in 50kg category in the Asian championships in Bishkek to start the action-packed year on a positive note.

She defeated former World champion Jessica MacDonald of Canada to win her second successive gold medal in the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast and got the better of Japanese Yuki Irie in Jakarta to become the first Indian woman wrestler to pin a gold medal in the Asian Games.

Also, she achieved the rare feat of notching up the CWG and Asiad titles in the same calendar.

This helped her carve a niche for herself by breaking free from the tag of being known as one of the Phogat sisters.

Vinesh switched to 57kg and made another National title her own before concluding the memorable year by tying the nuptial knot with wrestler Somvir Rathee.

Vinesh, one of the brightest sportspersons from the country at the moment, will now focus on directing all her energy towards 2020 Olympics.
