Host Bangladesh gave the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup 2016 a momentous start with a 43-run victory over defending champion South Africa in the opening Group A match.

Host Bangladesh gave the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup 2016 a momentous start with a 43-run victory over defending champion South Africa in the opening Group A match, here on Wednesday.

Electing to bat, Bangladesh were restricted to 240 for seven in its 50 overs. Nazmul Hossain hit 73 off 82 balls to boost the total after useful contributions from Pinak Ghosh (43) and Joyraz Sheik (46).

The target proved too tough for South Africa, who were bowled out for 197 in the penultimate over despite a defiant 100 from opener Liam Smith.

Meanwhile, in a Group C fixture, Dan Lawrence and Jack Burnham hit centuries as title contender England crushed Fiji by 299 runs.

The scores:

Group A: Bangladesh 240 for seven (Pinak Ghosh 43, Joyraz Sheik 46, Nazmul Hossain Shanto 73, Wiaan Mulder three for 42) bt South Africa 197 in 48.3 overs (Liam Smith 100, Mehedi Miraz three for 37, Mohammad Saifuddin three for 30).

England 371 for three (Dan Lawrence 174, Jack Burnham 148) bt Fiji 72 (Peni Vuniwaqa 36, Saqib Mahmood three for two, Sam Curran three for 22).

Tomorrow’s matches:

Group B: Afghanistan v Pakistan; Canada v Sri Lanka.

Group D: India v Ireland.
