D'Arcy Short enjoyed a wonderful Big Bash League debut as the Hobart Hurricanes kicked off their campaign with a 60-run win over the Sydney Sixers at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Opener Short got the Hurricanes off to a flying start on Friday, striking three sixes and eight fours in a 29-ball 61, while skipper Tim Paine also starred at the top of the order with 63 from 45 deliveries.
Those innings helped the Hurricanes to a healthy total of 200-6 and the Sixers — who had beaten the Sydney Thunder in the opening game of the competition — came up well short in reply. Jason Roy and Sam Billings contributed 40 and 42 respectively, but it was another England international, Stuart Broad, who finished on the winning side on his first appearance for Hobart.
Broad was unable to make an impact with the ball, conceding 35 in three wicket-less overs, but Clive Rose and Hamish Kingston picked up two scalps apiece for the Hurricanes and Shaun Tait bounced back from conceding 20 in his first set of six to finish with 3-32, striking thrice in the 15th over.
HENRIQUES GOES FROM HERO TO ZERO
On Tuesday, Moises Henriques was dropped first ball and went on to make a match-winning unbeaten 76 against the Thunder. The Sixers skipper was not so fortunate on Friday, however, as he fell for a golden duck, Rose diving to his right to take an impressive return catch.
WE'RE GONNA NEED A NEW STUMP ...
After conceding three fours and a six to Roy in the first over of the match, Tait may have been a little frustrated. He responded superbly, giving up just five runs in his second over before accounting for Steve O'Keefe, Sean Abbott and Billings in the space of five balls as the Sixers' innings fell apart.
Billings could hardly have been dismissed in more emphatic fashion, as a searing yorker demolished the middle stump - forcing a brief delay.
