Delhi Daredevils changes its name to Delhi Capitals

The franchise announced its new name at a function in New Delhi on Tuesday.

A new start: Shreyas Iyer will remain the captain of the team for the 2019 season, the franchise has announced.

Delhi Daredevils is Delhi Capitals with a new logo and team colours in the next edition of the Indian Premier League. The new identity of the Delhi franchise was unveiled in the capital on Tuesday.

The support staff of Delhi Capitals would comprise of Head Coach Ricky Ponting, assistant coach Mohammad Kaif, bowling coach James Hopes with Shreyas Iyer the captain. Pravin Amre will be in-charge of talent scouting.

“We, at JSW Sports, are proud to be associated with the capital city of India and wanted our team, our players, our fans to wear that fact with pride,” said Parth Jindal, co-owner and chairman, Delhi Capitals.

Kiran Kumar Grandhi, co-owner, Delhi Capitals said, “The new name symbolizes Delhi’s identity and just like the city, we are aiming to be the centre of all action going forward.”

In a message, Ponting observed, “I have been through a lot of ups and downs in my time as a cricketer, and have realised how important it is to sometimes take a step back and start afresh.

"A new ideology and approach can do wonders towards revitalising a team, renewing their energy and spirit, which will in turn permeate into the team’s performances. Our team currently has all these in abundance and our goal is to achieve our new vision.”

Amre was happy with the role assigned to him. “We got Iyer and Prithvi Shaw through the talent hunt scheme. It is important to keep the supply line going. I have always enjoyed this work,” said Amre.
