Captain Pardeep Narwal scored 21 points in 25 attempts but it wasn’t enough to help his team as Patna Pirates lost 41-51 against U Mumba on Day two of the inter-zonal challenge matches at the Motilal Nehru School of Sports here on Saturday.
The two-time defending champion paid the price for a weak defence and lack of enough options in attack as U Mumba won the battle of raiders. Between them, Kashiling Adake, Shrikant Jadhav and Darshan Kadiyan scored 38 points for U Mumba even as 30 of the 41 points for Patna were shared by Narwal and Monu Goyat.
Patna Pirates-U Mumba match details
With both teams beginning cautiously, Mumba was the first to pull ahead in the 12th minute courtesy a two-pointer by Adake, who top-scored for Mumba with 15 points for his second Super 10 of the season. The last five minutes of the first half saw a desperate Narwal, trying to avoid the all-out, reviving his team-mates every time he went in for a raid, only to see them walk back. Patna was finally all-out with less than a minute to go for the break as Mumba led 24-14 at half time.
The second half saw a repeat with Narwal playing a lone hand. He couldn't match the combined superiority of Mumba raiders, though.
