Pat on the back: Gaurav Gill earned praise from fellow competitors for his gutsy display.

It was so near yet so far for India’s finest rally driver Gaurav Gill (co-driver Glen Macneall) as a mechanical failure let him down yet again in the gruelling WRC Rally of Turkey in Marmaris on Sunday.

Going in the final day, the JK Racing star, competing in the WRC2 class, went full throttle from the start finishing second in the first stage and followed it up with another brilliant run in the next stage.

And just when the going was good, the transmission of the car seized, crushing his hopes of a brilliant finish.

Frustrating

“It is literally very frustrating but this is how cruel the sport is. You put in lots of hard work for months together for JK Tyre and the team and it snaps in a second,” Gill said in an exclusive chat with Sportstar.

“I was consistently among the top three. We did not have enough testing and we chose the most difficult rally in the world to test our strengths. And, I am personally pleased with my show but, it can be better still.”

“I will still strive and drive as hard as I can because for me it is always never enough,” he added.

Glen said they are used to these things. “It is now for us to learn what to do different and how to be faster instead of sitting and getting upset. Gaurav was easily the fastest. He is very skilful and naturally talented but it was quite unfortunate,” he said.
