Reliance Jio, the digital platform of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), has announced its partnership with India’s Olympic contingent as its principal partner.

“Each one of these athletes qualified to represent India at Olympic Games, is our national hero. The Reliance family, on behalf of its 1.3 billion countrymen wishes our athletes the very best,” said a spokesperson.

While the company statement didn’t specify the sponsorship deal amount, Sportstar understands that Jio has agreed to shell out approximately Rs. 4 crore to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

The announcement comes a little over a month after Nita Ambani, the founder and chairperson of Reliance Foundation, became the first Indian woman to be nominated to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Her appointment will be ratified during the IOC session in Rio de Janeiro ahead of the Olympic.

The Olympic contingent sponsorship is another attempt of the Reliance group to diversify its interest in the sports industry -- RIL owns the Indian Premier League team, Mumbai Indians and is also a key stakeholder in the Indian Super League.
