Gurpreet fails to qualify for final at World Cup

The 28-year-old Gurpreet won an Olympic quota in air pistol for Rio, and has been shooting exceptionally well in rapid fire pistol with scores of 586, 585 and 581 in the World Cup and World Cup Final last season when he thrice missed a medal. But he happened to slip on the second day of this ongoing competition.

After shooting the second best score of 291 at the halfway stage in a small field of 24 shooters, Gurpreet dropped precious points in the 8-second and 6-second series that resulted in a second half score of 286. He had shot an identical 95 in the difficult 4-second series both the times.

Zhang Fusheng of China clinched the gold one point ahead of compatriot Li Yuehong, the Asian Games gold medallist in Guangzhou in 2010, while the silver medallist of the 2010 Asian Games, Than Ha Minh of Vietnam bagged the bronze.

The World Cup will end with the men’s 50-metre rifle 3-position event on Tuesday.
