Estoril Open: Purav, Divij, Paes bow out in quarterfinals

The strong Indian doubles challenge in the ATP 250 event in Estoril suffered a double blow in the quarterfinals.

The strong Indian doubles challenge in the ATP 250 event in Estoril suffered a double blow in the quarterfinals. Leander Paes in partnership with Andre Sa of Brazil was pipped in the super tie-break 10-8 by the Spaniards, Nicolas Almagro and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Paes and Sa had bounced back from 3-4 in the second set to force match the tie-break by winning three games on the trot.

The other Indian pair of Purav Raja and Divij Sharan was beaten in straight sets by Ariel Behar of Uruguay and Aliaksandr Bury of Belarus. The quarterfinalist teams fetched 45 ATP points and EUR 4260. In the USD 50,000 Challenger in Korea, Yuki Bhambri utilised the time on hand nicely, after losing the singles pre-quarterfinals to the second seed, by knocking out the top seeds Sanchai Ratiwatana and Sonchat Ratiwatana of Thailand 6-7(3), 6-4, 11-9 in the doubles quarterfinals.

Yuki was unseeded in partnership with Brydan Klein of Britain, and the duo turned the match around after facing two match-points at 7-9 in the super tie-break. In the Challenger in Ostrava, top seeds, Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan in partnership with Franko Skugor of Croatia made the doubles semifinals.

In the USD 15,000 ITF women’s event in Cairo, Sowjanya Bavisetti made the singles quarterfinals and the doubles semifinals with Rishika Sunkara.
