Roger Federer is bidding to win Wimbledon for the ninth time.

The first day's play saw Wimbledon favourite Roger Federer cruise into the next round while Serena Williams , the former world No.1, made a winning start to her campaign as well. Elina Svitolina, one of the favourites to lift the title, lose to Tatjana Maria.

1:36 am: Tatjana Maria beats Svitolina 7-6, 4-6, 6-1!

1:30am: Tatjana Maria leads the third set 5-0, will serve for the match!

1:10am: Svitolina takes the second set 6-4.

12:59am: Svitolina leads second set 4-3. Can she stage a comeback?

12:03am: Svitolina breaks! But she's still trails 3-5 in the opening set.

12:00am: Svitolina saves one set point. And then a second. She's not out of the woods yet, though.

11:54pm: Trouble for Svitolina. Tatjana Maria is serving for the first set at 5-2.

11:30pm: Fifth seed Elina Svitolina is broken by Tatjana Maria in the opening game of their first-round match.

11:27pm: Stan Wawrinka wins! 1-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

Sixth seed Grigor Dimitrov will have some thinking to do after this, losing to the former world No.3, who's been down and out for the last few months since returning from injury. Wawrinka had dropped out of the top 250 in the world after his Roland Garros opening-round loss, but this win should energise him.

11:13pm: Stefanos Tsitsipas is into round 2 with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 7-5 win over Grégoire Barrère. The 19-year-old, seeded 31st at Wimbledon, reached the second round of the French Open, too.

11:10pm: Gaël Monfils is through to the second round of Wimbledon with a 7-6 (8-6), 7-5, 6-4 win over compatriot Richard Gasquet, the 23rd seed.

11:07pm: Gaël Monfils is serving for the match at 5-4 in the third set against Richard Gasquet.

10:59pm: Wawrinka saves two break points and holds serve. He leads 1-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5), 2-1 against Dimitrov.

10:50pm: Eighth seed Kevin Anderson, the US Open runner-up, beats Norbert Gombos 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

10:45pm: A standard Stan Wawrinka backhand down the line gives him the third-set tiebreak! What power! He leads two sets to one against sixth seed Grigor Dimitrov.

10:39pm: The Dimitrov-Wawrinka match is into another tiebreak.

On Court No.8, Yuki Bhambri is out after losing 6-2, 3-6, 3-6, 2-6 to Thomas Fabbiano.

10:28pm: Serena Williams wins!

The former world No.1 is seeded 25th in her first Wimbledon and second Grand Slam since stepping away from the WTA Tour for the birth of her daughter last year. She's now through to the second round at SW19 after a hard-fought 7-5, 6-3 win over by Arantxa Rus, but she needed six match points to get there.

10:27pm: Rus saves match point No.5 with a fabulous cross-court return!

10:25pm: A mistimed return by Rus gives Serena match point No.4. And the seven-time Wimbledon winner sends her shot wildly long! This is some great tennis on the No.1 Court!

10:23pm: Rus whips Serena's second serve down the line to tie the game at 40-40. Serena approaches the net on the next point, and Rus sends the ball into the net while attempting a passing shot. Third match point.

10:22pm: Serena sends her first match point long. She has one more.

10:19pm: Serena Williams will serve for the match at 5-3 after breaking Arantxa Rus again!

10:12pm: Nineteen-year-old British wildcard Katie Swan, who qualified for her first WTA main-draw tournament at Nottingham less than a month ago, defeats Irina-Camelia Begu 6-2, 6-2.

On Centre Court, Serena Williams wins two straight games to take the second set back on serve.

10:08pm: Serena Williams is being pushed by the world No.105 Arantxa Rus, who is up a break at 3-2 in the second set.

9:50pm: Stan Wawrinka wins the second set against Grigor Dimitrov in a tiebreak. It's one set apiece.

On Court No.8, Thomas Fabbiano leads Yuki Bhambri 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

9:44pm: Arantxa Rus refuses to bow to Queen Serena! She saves one set point. But Serena, the winner of seven singles, six doubles and one mixed doubles titles at Wimbledon, wins the first set 7-5.

9:40pm: Gael Monfils wins the first-set tiebreak 8-6 against compatriot Richard Gasquet.

9:36pm: After going down 0-30, Rus holds serve. Serena serves at 5-5 in the first set.

On Court 18, Tsitsipas is up two sets to love against Barrère.

9:25pm: Another seed is through. John Isner wins 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 against German qualifier Yannick Maden.

On Centre Court, Dimitrov serves at 3-4 in the second set after recovering from a break down to Wawrinka.

9:18pm: It's time for Stan Wawrinka to break! The Swiss serves at 4-2 in the second set against Grigor Dimitrov, who won the first 6-1.

9:16pm: Rus breaks Serena back. It's 2-2 on the seven-time champion's serve.

9:11pm: Ivo Karlović beats Mikhail Youzhny 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (9-7), 6-3.

The 6'11" Karlović continues to defy the ravages of time – he's less than eight months short of his 40th birthday. At the Australian Open, he made it as far as the round of 32. For the record: Youzhny is not really young himself; he turned 36 two weeks ago.

9:09pm: Greek teenager Stefanos Tsitsipas wins the first set 6-3 against French qualifier Grégoire Barrère. Tsitsipas has had a breakthrough year, reaching his first ATP Tour final at the Barcelona Open, where he lost to Rafael Nadal.

9:05pm: Thomas Fabbiano makes it a set apiece against Yuki Bhambri.

9:04pm: Serena Williams holds serve at the beginning of her match against Arantxa Rus on the No.1 Court.

9:00pm: Dimitrov wins the first set against Wawrinka 6-1.

8:51pm: Uh-oh. This is definitely not the Wawrinka really of old. He's been broken a second time by Dimitrov, who's serving at 4-0. The three-time Grand Slam winner's struggle after his return from injury continues. Remember: he was dumped out of the French Open in the first round a little over a month ago.

8:50pm: Serena Williams, seeded 25th this year, will be facing Arantxa Rus on the No.1 Court next.

8:45pm: On Centre Court, sixth seed Grigor Dimitrov is up a break in the opening set against former world No.3 Stan Wawrinka.

On the No.2 Court, two of the elder statesmen of French tennis, Richard Gasquet and Gael Monfils, have begun their match.

8:40pm: Milos Raonic saunters into the second round with a 7-5, 6-0, 6-1 win over Liam Broady.

8 :35pm: It's all over for Borna Ćorić. Just eight days after defeating Roger Federer in the final of the Gerry Weber Open at Halle, the 21-year-old Croat loses 6-7 (6-8) 2-6, 2-6 to Daniil Medvedev. This is the third straight first-round loss for the 16th seed at Wimbledon.

8:32pm: Venus Williams comes back after losing the first set to win 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-1 against Johanna Larsson.

8:28pm: Yuki Bhambri wins the first set 6-2 against Thomas Fabbiano.

8:25pm: Victoria Azarenka is through with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win over Ekaterina Alexandrova.

8:20pm: Caroline Wozniacki defeats Varvara Lepchenko 6-0, 6-3 in her opening encounter.

8:04pm: Venus Williams breaks in the opening game of the third set.

On Court No.12, it's looking bad for the Federer-slayer. Borna Ćorić is down two sets and is broken in the first game of the third set by Daniil Medvedev.

7:56pm: Daniil Medvedev goes up two sets to love (7-6, 6-2) against Borna Ćorić.

On Court No.3, John Isner, the No.9 seed, is up a set against Yannick Maden, who is making his first main-draw appearance at a Grand Slam after going through the qualifiers.

On Centre Court, Lepchenko broke Wozniacki in the opening game of the second set, but the Danish second seed has levelled the set. It's 2-2 on Wozniacki's serve.

And Venus Williams has won the second set against Johanna Larsson on the No.2 Court. We're into a decider.

7:53pm: 2016 finalist Milos Raonic wins the opening set 7-5 against British wildcard Liam Broady.

7:42pm: We have our first bagel of Wimbledon 2018. Wozniacki blanks Lepchenko in the opening set.

On the No.2 Court, Venus Williams is up a break at 3-2 after losing the first set to Larsson.

On Court No.12, Ćorić is not looking very comfortable. He's down a set and a break to Medvedev.

7:29pm: Medvedev wins a close opening-set tiebreak 8-6 against Ćorić.

Ćorić has lost in the first round of Wimbledon the last two years, after reaching the second round on his debut here in 2015. Medvedev, meanwhile, made the second round in 2017 in his first appearance.

7:22pm: Venus Williams squanders a 3-1 lead in the tiebreak. Larsson wins six straight points to take the first set.

MATCH REPORT: Federer breezes past Lajovic in Wimbledon opener

7:17pm: Venus Williams saves set points against Johanna Larsson as she holds serve and takes the first set into a tiebreak.

7:10pm: On Centre Court, Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki, the second seed, will take on Varvara Lepchenko next.

MATCH REPORT: Vekic stuns US Open champ Stephens at Wimbledon

7:07pm: Madison Keys, the 10th seed, has beaten Ajla Tomljanović 6-4, 6-2.

On Court 12, Borna Ćorić, the 21-year-old Croatian who stunned Roger Federer in the Halle final last Sunday , is facing another upcoming talent, the 22-year-old Russian Daniil Medvedev.

6:59pm: Roger Federer is through to the second round with a 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 win over Dušan Lajović in an hour and 19 minutes on Centre Court.

6:52pm: SLOANE STEPHENS IS OUT!

Donna Vekić makes easy work of the fourth seed with a 6-3, 6-1 win in the first round. That's the first big upset of Wimbledon 2018. Stephens had cracked the top 10 in the world by reaching the final of Roland Garros, where she lost to world No.1 Simona Halep, and was seeded fourth at a Grand Slam for the first time in her career at the All-England Club. But consistency has never been the reigning US Open champion's forte.

6:44pm: Stephens saves two match points.

6:40pm: Donna Vekić is serving for the match at 5-3, 6-1 against Sloane Stephens.

On Court No.3, Madison Keys has won the first set against Ajla Tomljanović 6-4.

6:30pm: Roger Federer leads Dušan Lajović 6-1, 6-3. Routine stuff for the 20-Grand Slam champion.

Not so for Sloane Stephens, who's down 1-6, 2-3 to Donna Vekić.

6:10pm: Sloane Stephens loses the first set to Donna Vekić.

6:00pm: Marin Čilić is through to the second round, defeating Yoshihito Nishioka 6-1, 6-4, 6-4.

Five-time champion Venus Williams will face Johanna Larsson on the No.2 Court next. It's been 10 years since the American last won the singles title here at SW19. At 38, can she win one more? Williams came tantalisingly close last year, but Garbiñe Muguruza walloped her 7-5, 6-0 in the final.

5:59pm: Roger Federer breezes through the first set 6-1, with Lajović not winning a game after holding serve in the opener.

5:57pm: Alexandra Dulgheru wins her opening match against Kristýna Plíšková 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.

On Court No.18, Denis Kudla wins the third set, but Lucas Pouille holds the advantage at 6-3, 6-3, 2-6.

5:40pm: Harriet Dart wins the second set 6-2 and levels her match against Karolína Plíšková.

5:44pm:Sam Querrey is through to the second round with a regulation 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 win over Jordan Thompson. Next up on Court 3: Madison Keys, the American 10th seed who lost to Sloane Stephens in both the French Open semis and the US Open final, will face Ajla Tomljanović.

And Federer breaks to go up 2-1 in the opening set.

5:40pm: Court No.11 sees the first upset of the day. Sorana Cîrstea of Belgium ousts 19th seed Magdaléna Rybáriková with a 7-5, 6-3 victory.

On Court No.1, French Open runner-up and reigning US Open champion Sloane Stephens, seeded fourth for the first time in her career, is playing Donna Vekić.

5:35pm: Roger Federer is on Centre Court. Will he make it nine titles two Sundays from now? The great Martina Navratilova is the only player, male or female, to win the singles title at the All-England Club nine times.

For today, the top seed has Dušan Lajović to contend with.

5:32pm: We have the first completed match of Wimbledon 2018. Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium beats Germany's Mona Barthel 7-5, 6-4. Next up on Court No.8: 21st seed Anastasija Sevastova vs Camila Giorgi.

Čilić holds. It's 1-1 in the third set.

5:28pm: Nishioka has three break points on the Čilić serve.

On Court No.12, after Karolína Plíšková wins one break back, the seventh seed is broken immediately by Harriet Dart. The Brit is serving at 4-1 in the second set.

5:20pm: Marin Čilić holds serve to win the second set. The third seed leads Yoshihito Nishioka 6-1, 6-4 on Court No.1.

Top seed Roger Federer will begin his opening-round match against Dušan Lajović on Centre Court soon. After that, second seed Caroline Wozniacki will take on Varvara Lepchenko. And rounding off the first day's action on Centre Court will be Stan Wawrinka and Grigor Dimitrov. Wimbledon is the only Major the Swiss hasn't won, but no one's putting money on him this year. His return from injury has been torrid, with a loss in the first round of the French Open, where he was the runner-up last year, dropping him out of the top 250 in the world.

5:18pm: Philipp Kohlschreiber wins the second set 6-4 to lead Evgeny Donskoy two sets to love.

5:15pm: Four set points saved! Nishioka holds serve, but Čilić will serve for the second set.

On Court No.12, Harriet Dart is not going down easily to Karolína Plíšková. After forcing a tiebreak in the first set, the British world No.181 has broken the seventh seed twice in the second.

5:12pm: Nishioka has saved three set points on his serve against Čilić. But the Japanese world No.256 isn't out of danger yet.

5:05pm: Sam Querrey is up 6-2, 6-4 against Jordan Thompson on Court No.3.

And Karolína Plíšková storms through the tiebreak against Harriet Dart 7-2.

5:00pm: We have the first tiebreak of Wimbledon 2018. Harriet Dart to serve against Karolína Plíšková on Court No. 12.

4:55pm: Marin Čilić wins is up a break at 3-1 in the second set.

4:52pm: Harriet Dart, the 21-year-old British wildcard, breaks Karolína Plíšková, who was serving for the first set. It's 5-5.

Meanwhile, the other Plíšková – Kristýna – has lost the opening set 4-6 to Alexandra Dulgheru.

4:48pm: Lucas Pouille, the 17th seed, wins the first set 6-3 against Denis Kudla. Elsewhere, 25th seed Philipp Kohlschreiber is up 6-2, 1-1 against Evgeny Donskoy.

4:41pm: Marin Čilić wins the first set 6-1. Easy work for the third seed.

4:38pm: Among the seeds, No.11 Sam Querrey, the big-serving American, has won his opening set 6-2 against Jordan Thompson, while No.32 Leonardo Mayer won his 6-3 against Jan-Lennard Struff.

4:37pm: Nishioka holds serve to win his first game of the match. Čilić serves for the opening set.

4:33pm: Marin Čilić has raced to a 5-0 lead in the first set.

4:30pm: Both Plíšková twins are on court, too. Former world No.1 Karolína, seeded seventh, is up a break against Harriet Dart in the opening set on Court 12, while the less-heralded Kristýna is down a break against Alexandra Dulgheru on Court 6.

4:25pm: Čilić breaks Nishioka again. He leads 4-0.

4:20pm: Marin Čilić breaks Yoshihito Nishioka to take an early 2-0 lead in the first set, then holds serve to go up 3-0.

Čilić is yet to add to his sole Grand Slam title – the 2014 US Open. He's faced Roger Federer in all three Major finals he's reached, losing in straight sets at Wimbledon last year and then taking the champion to five sets in Australia this year. But the Croatian will be looking to ride on his form after defeating Novak Djokovic in the Queen's Club final last Sunday.

4:00pm: Defending champion Roger Federer will begin his campaign for a record-extending ninth singles title at the All-England Club on Monday, while his opponent in last year's final, Marin Čilić, will begin the proceedings on Court No.2 on the opening day of the oldest Grand Slam.

Both Williams sisters will playing their opening-round matches, too – Serena, seeded 25th despite being ranked 183 in the world, will play Arantxa Rus on Court No.1, while Venus faces Johanna Larsson on Court No.2

In disappointing news for British tennis fans, Andy Murray pulled out of the Championships at the 11th hour, citing his lack of readiness for best-of-five-set matches after almost a year out with injury. Murray had been set to make his Grand Slam return at SW19, having recently returned from hip surgery with encouraging appearances at Queen's Club and Eastbourne.
