Garbine Muguruza is playing with a simpler approach at the Australian Open and it is producing the results after she eased into the fourth round.

The Spaniard cemented her place in the top 10 at the 2016 French Open when she overcame Serena Williams to claim her first grand slam title.

Since lifting the Roland Garros crown her form has stuttered, though, with early exits at Wimbledon and the US Open in what she describes as a "hard" time.

After a shaky start in Melbourne, Muguruza looked close to her best on Friday as she dispatched Anastasija Sevastova 6-4, 6-2 and the 23-year-old revealed a change of approach was behind her revival.

"I think I'm more, like, calmer, if [that] makes sense," she told a media conference. "I'm a little bit further from that emotional, you know, craziness when you, like, lose a point, you get upset a little bit.

"So I'm taking that a little bit from a distance, you know, try to analyse less, just go for the next point, keep in mind only positive messages. I think basically, simple stuff.

"The US Open was hard for me. Since Roland Garros I played Wimbledon, too. Sorry. But that was like a drama, too. So, yes, [I am] much better [now].

"I'm proud of how I'm acting on the court, putting my best effort on the court, try to be positive. I'm happy with that. Hopefully I can keep as long as possible.

"I don't analyse that much anymore. I try to be more simple. I'm learning a lot with the time. Before, when you're younger, everything is more emotional, like I said before. I'm just trying to learn from that, to try to have a step back, just be more relaxed."
