Udit Gogoi became the Road to Wimbledon Under-14 champion, defeating Chirag Duhan 6-3, 6-2 in the final on the grass courts of the Delhi Gymkhana Club here on Friday.

Top seed Udit, who trains with coach Sandeep Chaudhary at the Mount St. Mary’s School in Delhi Cantonment, played a compact all-round game to assert his supremacy in winning six matches over four days, without dropping a set.

Mature conduct

Coach Dan Bloxham was happy to see the quality of the game of the players who moved well and hit fluently, and praised them for their excellent conduct. “There was so much at stake, the dream of playing in Wimbledon. Naturally, those who lost were disappointed but they conducted themselves in a mature manner,” said Dan, comparing the behaviour of the British kids in the same age group.

The tall Duhan, who trains with coach Gaurav Sharma in Defence Colony in the capital, had ousted Aman Dahiya in the semifinals, but could not bring out his best game later in the afternoon. Both players will compete in the U. K. Under-14 championship on the grass courts of Wimbledon in August.

The two girls Sanjana Sirimalla and Renne Singla had qualified from the tournament last week in Kolkata.

It was a good warm-up, albeit on grass, for the three members of the Indian Under-14 team for the Asian Oceania World Junior Cup to be played in Bangkok. The team of Udit Gogoi, Chirag Duhan and Aman Dahiya was scheduled to leave on Saturday.
