World Athletics Championships 2023: Top three contenders in men’s discus throw

The World Athletics Championships 2023 will be held in Budapest from August 19 to 27.

The World Athletics Championships 2023 will be held in Budapest from August 19 to 27.

The men’s discus throw is set to be one of the highly anticipated events in the Hungarian capital. Here are the top three contenders for the gold medal in Budapest:

Kristjan Ceh

Kristjan Ceh is the current World Champion and World Record holder in the men’s discus throw.

The Solvenian athlete finished 5th in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but followed it up with gold at the 2022 Eugene World Championships.

Season Best: 71.86 at Johvi, Estonia in June 2023.

Daniel Stahl

Daniel Stahl won gold in men’s discus at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with a throw of 68.90m

The German also won gold at the 2019 World Championships in Doha adding a silver he won at the 2017 Championships in London.

Season Best: 71.45 at Johvi, Estonia in June 2023.

Mykolas Alekna

Mykolas Alekna, son of two-time World Championship gold medallist Virgilijus Alekna, won gold at the 2022 European Games.

Apart from gold medals in the discus throw event at the European U20 Championships and World U20 Championships in 2021, Alekna also won silver at the 2022 senior World Championships at Eugene in 2022.

Season Best: 71.00 at Berkeley, California in April 2023

Lukas Weisshaidinger, the bronze medallist at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2019 World Championships in Doha is another contestant to look forward to in the men’s discus throw event.
