In January 1984, Anand gained an international rating of 2285. Two years later, he became an International Master with a rating of 2405.
He became the first Indian to achieve a rating of 2500 in December 1987. He was listed as a Grand Master in 1988.
He broke the 2600-rating barrier in July 1990 and was ranked 19th in the world.
With a rating of 2650, he was among the top-10 players of the world in July 1991.
Barring four months last year, Anand has remained in the top-10 list for 26 years.
