South Africa has roped in Mumbai cricket stalwart Amol Muzumdar as the batting coach of the team for the Test series against India, which begins on October 2.

While Lance Klusener will be work with the team as its assistant batting coach for the T20I series, Muzumdar will join the side ahead of its Test assignments.

“Sometime last week, they approached me and inquired about my availability. I agreed to take up the role,” the 44-year-old Muzumdar told  Sportstar  on Monday.

'Looking forward'

Muzumdar, who has scored 11,167 first-class runs, has time and again worked with international teams touring India. “I know some of the players like Temba Bavuma, Aiden Markram, so that will be of help. I am looking forward to the assignment,” Muzumdar said.

Muzumdar — who also also scored 3286 runs in List A cricket — was also the batting coach of IPL franchise, Rajasthan Royals, for the last two seasons.

'Big responsibility'

The three-match Test will begin in Visakhapatnam on October 2, followed by matches in Pune — from October 10-14 — and Ranchi — October 19-23. “I am yet to talk to the players. Surely, it will be a big challenge and a big responsibility. But I am looking forward to the series,” Muzumdar said.

While he is yet to speak to the team management, Muzumdar is likely to join the team later this month. “The team has some senior and young players. So, it will be a good contest,” Muzumdar said.

In its last tour to India in 2015, South Africa had won the T20I and ODI series, but went down 3-0 in the four-match Test series. But now, with the side going through a transition phase, Muzumdar will have a challenging job.
