South Africa slumped to a 2-1 series defeat in Steyn's absence, although his replacement Kagiso Rabada took 22 wickets in three Tests - more than any bowler - to provide slight cause for optimism.

"All initial scans were clear but when symptoms did not improve, we discovered a reaction in the bone itself," Mohammed Moosajee, South Africa's team manager, is quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

"This is very rare in fast bowlers as it is usually caused by trauma. We are treating it conservatively because he is a fast bowler and we know we have the World T20 coming up."

Injury updates

The Proteas are also unlikely to have Vernon Philander in the side due to an ankle injury, while Kyle Abbott will miss the first ODI in Bloemfontein with a hamstring issue.

Rabada, whose 13-144 at Centurion represented Test-best figures for a South African on home soil, and Morne Morkel will play a bit-part role in the limited-overs games, coach Russell Domingo confirmed.

"They definitely won't play all five games," he said. "We will look to bring one or two new fast bowlers in."
