KL Rahul's quickfire fifty drives Punjab's run chase.   -  SPORTZPICS

What an innings that from the Punjab skipper. Spearheads the run chase with a brilliant 42-ball 98. He hit seven fours and eight sixes during that scintillating knock. CSK have now lost three matches in a row. Not something MSD will be too pleased about heading into the playoffs. Meanwhile, PBKS still have an outside chance of qualifying for the playoffs. Punjab would hope KKR lose big tonight and then Mumbai lose tomorrow. That would be all from this match. It is a double header tonight. KKR takes on RR next. The men in yellow take the field as KL and Mayank walk out together, eyeing another big opening stand, hopefully one that will be backed by the middle-order for once.

CSK finish on 134/6, thanks to Faf. Good effort from PBKS. Arshdeep and Jordan got a couple of wickets each. Slower wicket, made more challenging by the smart variations of pace. Harsha Bhogle on air states that Punjab needs to chase down this target in 17 balls to go past KKR's net run rate! Anyway, Punjab will hope to wrap up the chase as quickly as possible. Chennai will look to stop them. Back soon.

CSK 55/4 (11 overs): Harpreet Brar returns. Four dots later, MS gets a single. How long before CSK think about accelerating? Surely, Faf will look to be the aggressor. He bowls a wide and the extra ball's a dot too. Just two from the over.

CSK 53/4 (10 overs): FOUR! A loose full-toss outside off from Bishnoi and Dhoni steps out to smash it past short third. Two dots follow as Dhoni is beaten outside off trying to drive a full one. Rayudu looks to slash a short one on off and gets the top edge. Ambati Rayudu c Arshdeep b Chris Jordan 4(5b 0x4 0x6). Dhoni is the new man in and that would have raised some eyebrows after the skipper's sluggish innings last match against the Capitals. Dhoni gets off the mark straightaway with a single. Slower one outside off and Faf stretches to flash that and gets beaten. KL Rahul doesn't go for the review after showing some interest initially.

CSK 39/3 (8 overs): Ravi Bishnoi is handed the ball. Bishnoi is resorting to a shortish length. He looks interested in a caught behind chance after the umpire doesn't call it wide. Moeen Ali c KL Rahul b Arshdeep 0(6b 0X4 0X6). Robin Uthappa starts off with a dot and a single to retain strike.

Note: CSK has the second lowest run rate in the Powerplay this season, only better than that of Punjab Kings.

CSK 20/1 (5 overs): Shami into his third over. Faf takes a slightly risky single. Moeen mistimes a pull as the ball lands safely at mid-on. Shami giving a classic display of the merits of pace and accuracy as Moeen plays out five dots. Just one from the over.

CSK 19/1 (4 overs): Arshdeep replaces Brar. Pace from both ends now. Faf gets off strike first ball. A couple for Gaikwad as he deftly tucks it to deep square leg. Tidy from Shami.

Gaikwad takes his guard at the striker's crease. Mohammad Shami to begin with the new ball. Let's Play!

2:55 PM: Five minutes to go for the toss. A must-win game for Punjab. If they lose, they are eliminated. A victory doesn't guarantee them a passage into the playoffs but they will still have the slimmest of chance.

Winning is a lot about momentum. Particularly while entering the climactic phase of a high stakes competition.

After a stupendous run that saw it become the first team to qualify for the playoff, Chennai Super Kings (18 points from 13 matches) has suffered a slump of sorts, going down in its last two games.

Under the circumstances, M.S. Dhoni and his men will attempt to arrest the slump and get back on the highway to glory against Punjab Kings in its last game in Dubai on Thursday.

Punjab Kings (10 from 13) is a team that has discovered ways to lose from winning situations. Set batters have been unable to stay on and finish the job; the side has been consumed by the pressures of the chase.

Punjab Kings not just has to defeat CSK by a huge margin to get its run-rate above that of Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians, but also hope both these sides lose their last matches.

Drakes for Curran

CSK has named West Indies’ all-rounder Dominic Drakes as a replacement for all-rounder Sam Curran, ruled out with a lower-back injury. Drakes is a left-handed batsman and left-arm medium-pacer.

Punjab Kings needs to get everything right in this clash. Anil Kumble’s men have shown some promise without getting all the pieces together. Young leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi, left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh and the hard-hitting Shahrukh Khan are all youngsters with talent.

Much focus will be on the in-form openers of both teams — Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis and K.L. Rahul and Mayank Agarwal.
