East Bengal announced its new squad under coach Khalid Jamil ahead of the start of the local season, where it will be defending the Premier division title of the Calcutta Football League (CFL) which is scheduled to get underway on August 10.

East Bengal’s announcement packs a few surprises like captain Arnab Mondal, Mohammad Rafique, Gurwinder Singh and Cavin Lobo, who did not join the lucrative ISL Player Draft and chose to stay back with the I-League club.

While the national federation – AIFF – has allowed the I-League clubs to sign six foreigners, East Bengal has named three – defender Carlyle Mitchell (Trinidad and Tobago), midfielder Mahmoud Al Amna (Syria) and striker Willis Plaza (Trinidad and Tobago) – ahead of the local season.

Bagan names Ferreira as fourth foreigner

Mohun Bagan announced its decision to rope in Australian Diogo Alexandre Alves Ferreira as the fourth foreigner ahead of the start of the CFL.

Bagan – which previously announced the names of Nigerian defender Kingsley Eze, Liberian midfielder Ansumana Kromah and Ivory Coast’s striker Stephen Bayi Kamo in the squad – said in a statement that Ferreira will be arriving in the city soon for a medical test and the subsequent signing of contract. Ferreira is currently playing in the Malaysian Super League club Penang FC.

Meanwhile, the club announced its decision to release seasoned midfielder Denson Devadas giving the reason that the player’s “playing style does not suit the current formation that coach Sankarlal Chakraborty (who is named to stand in for Sanjoy Sen in CFL) is planning to play in the upcoming CFL 2017.”

Bagan inducted two new names – midfielders Surchandra Singh from Churchill Brothers and Souvik Das form Minerva Punjab FC – in the squad for the fresh season.
