Young Bashir hogs limelight

20 Shoaib Bashir’s age when he claimed his maiden five-wicket haul (5/119) of his Test career in the Ranchi Test match against India on 23 February 2024. This makes him the second youngest England bowler to do so after fellow team-mate Rehan Ahmed, who was 18y-128d when he claimed 5/48 against Pakistan in Karachi on 19 December 2022. Shoaib also became the third youngest to claim a five-wicket haul against India and the second youngest visiting bowler in India after South African left-arm wrist spinner Paul Adams, who was 19y-324d when he claimed 6/55 in Kanpur on 9 December 1996. Shoaib Bashir is now the fifth youngest off-spinner to claim a five-wicket haul.

4 The number of players who have the distinction of scoring 1000-plus runs and claiming 100-plus wickets against England in Tests. India’s R. Ashwin became the latest to join this elite group on 23 February 2024 when he took his 100th English wicket (Jonny Bairstow) in Ranchi on the opening day of the Test. Ashwin had already completed 1000 runs against England during this series in Visakhapatnam earlier. For the record, 128 batters have aggregated 1000 or more runs, and only 20 bowlers have claimed over 100 wickets against England. Of these many players, only a handful have managed to do the double against this opponent. Incidentally, R. Ashwin is the quickest to do so in just 23 Tests.

9 The number of bowlers who have claimed 100 or more Test wickets against a single opponent more than once. In the fourth Test match in Ranchi on 23 February 2024, R. Ashwin claimed his 100th wicket against England to become the latest bowler and the first Indian and the second Asian to achieve 100 wickets against two or more Test opponents. Last season, R. Ashwin had his 100th wicket against Australia in the Delhi Test match. West Indian Lance Gibbs was the first to do so against multiple opponents in February 1976 against Australia in Melbourne after getting a 100-wicket haul against England. The only Indian other than Ashwin to achieve 100-plus Test wickets against an opponent is Anil Kumble (111 wickets against Australia). Meanwhile, Test cricket’s top three wicket-takers, Muttiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne and James Anderson are the only bowlers to achieve this against three opponents.

4 The number of
bowlers who have claimed 80 or more Test wickets against a single opponent at home. R. Ashwin now has 91 wickets against England in Tests at home, which is the most by an Indian bowler against any opponent in India. Previously, Harbhajan Singh had claimed 86 wickets against Australia at home. Only England’s Stuart Broad and James Anderson have claimed over 100 wickets against an opponent at home.

3 The number of Indian bowlers to claim a Test five-wicket haul after the age of 37 years. R. Ashwin, when he claimed his record-equaling 35th five-wicket haul (with Anil Kumble) in the second innings in Ranchi against England on 25 February 2024, became the second oldest Indian to achieve this in a Test match. Vinoo Mankad was 37 years, 309 days, when he claimed 5/64 against Pakistan in Peshawar on 15 February 1955. The last 37-plus bowler before Ashwin to take a five-wicket haul against England was Ireland’s paceman Tim Murtagh (5/13) at Lord’s in July 2019 at 37y-356d.
