Around 5 pm, two hours prior to the start of the Sportstar Aces Awards supported by Supreme Committee of Delivery and Legacy, in association with MRF on Thursday, a loud enough whisper inside the Taj Mahal Palace caught every ear. ‘Pujara and family’. The India Test specialist had checked into the iconic hotel with his wife, Puja, for the event.

We had a quick chat with the champion batsman at the red carpet.

What are your memories with Sportstar?

As a child, I always used to read Sportstar and look for the poster. I am sure all the young cricketers, who have grown up watching the sport, have done this. It is an honour to be a part of this awards ceremony.

To Puja: How much of a cricket fan are you?

I  had no clue earlier. But we have a journey. It has been six years that we are married. I have reached from ‘not knowing anything about cricket’ to ‘I am learning’.

Pujara: Her understanding of cricket is much better now (laughs).

You came back from Australia and then, guided your state team Saurashtra to the Ranji Trophy final? Tell us about the importance of domestic cricket in an international cricketer’s life.

It is always important to play domestic cricket. That is where I started learning this game and that is where I got my success. It is important to me. Saurashtra had an opportunity to win the Ranji Trophy. I tried my best, unfortunately we lost in the finals but the team is built well. There are so many young players who are playing well. They have a bright future ahead.

Your thoughts on the World Test Championship that starts right after the World Cup with the tour of the Caribbean...

All of us are looking forward to the Test championship. We all started discussing about it. The first series after the World Cup, in West Indies, is a part of the World Test Championship. So we will be preparing well for that and will be hoping to win the Test championship.
