Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh by five wickets.

Player of the match: Charith Asalanka (80* off 49)

Charith Asalanka and birthday boy Bhanuka Rajapaksa scripted one of the greatest comebacks to seal a five-wicket win for Sri Lanka over Bangladesh in its first Super 12 match of the T20 World Cup 2021.

In pursuit of 172 on a sticky Sharjah wicket, Sri Lanka was rocked by Kusal Perera's early departure in the first over. Pathum Nissanka then paired with one drop Asalanka to put together 69 runs before Shakib Al Hasan's twin blows in the ninth over threatened to derail the chase. Wanindu Hasaranga fell soon after, leaving Sri Lanka needing 93 runs from 62 balls.

Asalanka and Rajapaksa took the bowlers to task with an 86-run partnership that brought down the equation to 7 off 10 balls. Asalanka fittingly took his side home with the winning runs.

Inserted to bat, Bangladesh was propelled to a challenging total riding on fifties by Mohammad Naim (62 off 52) and Mushfiqur Rahim (57* off 37). The duo paired for a 73-run third wicket stand that set up Bangladesh for a challenging total. Rahim's late flourish saw 64 runs coming in the last six overs while skipper Mahmudullah pitched in with two boundaries in the last two overs to take his team to 171/4.

FULL MATCH REPORT HERE: T20 World Cup: Asalanka's fireworks steer Sri Lanka past Bangladesh

SL 172/5 in 18.5 overs: Nasum to bowl his off-spin. Gutsy reverse-sweep on a straight one and Bhanuka collects a couple at square leg. OUT! Misses a straight one trying to chip it over off. Shanaka gets off strike first ball. Asalanka gets two. FOUR! A lucky outside edge to end an otherwise authoritative inning and a convincing run-chase. Asalanka has turned heads with that sublime knock in only his fifth T20I match. And before we forget, three cheers for birthday boy Bhanuka Rajapaksa on a stellar half-century.

SL 163/4 in 18 overs: Mustafizur continues. Keeps it tight with just one run from the first three. Prefers to go full outside off. Bhanuka runs a couple to reach his fifty in 28 balls. Opens the face late and guides it to third. Good yorker to finish the over. Just four from it.

SL 159/4 in 17 overs: Shakib bowls and this could be the last shot at a turnaround for Bangladesh. SIX! Asalanka bludgeons one over the ropes again and it is raining sixes over.

SL 148/4 in 16 overs: SIX! Saifuddin bowls slow on the pads and Bhanuka flicks it for a six over fine. SIX! Another one. More authoritative this time as it is smoked over mid-wicket. FOUR! Full outside off and Bhanuka gets a thickish outside edge for a boundary down third. Pummelled at mid-wicket for a single. FOUR! Full-toss outside off and Bhanuka skims it over cover.

SL 126/4 in 15 overs: Mustafizur to bowl. Experience comes in handy as only five come off it. Another dropped catch by Litton Das and it is the danger man Asalanka this time.

SL 121/4 in 14 overs: Mahmudullah continues. SIX! Asalanka again! Drags from outside off to deposit deep and over the straight boundary. Wide ball. SIX! Asalanka is taking the challenge to the bowlers. Slog sweeps over square leg on a slightly straighter one. Two singles to end the over. 16 runs from the over.

A short break here as Bhanuka seems to be struggling with cramps. The team physio comes out to have a look.

SL 105/4 in 13 overs: Afif into the attack. SIX! Bhanuka goes inside out and lifts it over extra cover. FOUR! Bhanuka sweeps and Liton drops a sitter at square leg. Three singles follow and Asalanka brings up his fifty!

SL 90/4 in 12 overs: Mahmudullah with the ball. Batters look to rebuild, picking up five singles from the over.

SL 85/4 in 11 overs: Mahedi to bowl out. Review taken by Bangladesh but replay shows daylight between bat and ball. So it's a wide down leg. Opens the blade to deftly nudge it to fine for a couple. Worked off the pads for a single and Bhanuka keeps strike.

SL 80/4 in 10 overs: Saifuddin with the ball. Driven uppishly by Hasaranga for a single at deep point. FOUR! Lucky again as Hasaranga drives and finds a thick outside edge that runs away to the boundary at third. OUT! Hasaranga perishes on a slower one that is pitched in the slot. No timing on it, gets the toe end and hands it straight to mid-wicket. Bhanuka comes in at number six.

SL 72/3 in 9 overs: OUT! Full and Shakib cleans up Nissanka who sweeps heedlessly. Shakib is now the leading wicket-taker in T20 World Cups with 40 scalps. Avishka comes in and plays out two dots. OUT! Cleaned up again and Shakib is the man for Bangladesh...again! Avishka looks to find the gap on the leg and is beaten in the air. Hasaranga comes in and takes a single to end the over.

SL 71/1 in 8 overs: Mahedi continues. Just four singles and Mahedi puts a much-needed break on the scoring rate. However, Asalanka and Nissanka look pleased pushing the ball around.

SL 67/1 in 7 overs: Mustafizur in the attack. FOUR! Pushes a full one between cover and mid-off to find the boundary. FOUR! Lucky boundary. Rahman beats Asalanka on the bounce but the batter's form ensures he gets an outside edge that runs away to third. Full outside off and Nissanka caresses it past point for a couple.

SL 54/1 in 6 overs: Mahedi to bowl his second. Nissanka finally unleashes in the final over of the powerplay. FOUR! Sweeps it slightly fine of square leg. Steps out and chips it to midwicket for a single. Wide down the leg as Nissanka shuffles to make room on the off. SIX! Smoked straight down the ground. Steps out to Mahedi and gets it off the middle.

SL 39/1 in 5 overs: Shakib to bowl. Reminder: Shakib needs one wicket to become the leading wicket-taker in T20 World Cups. Swept again for a couple by Asalanka. He seems to be eyeing the square boundary on the leg. Just five from the over.

SL 34/1 in 4 overs: Saifuddin to put some pace on the ball. Short and swing and a miss from Nissanka. He needs to find his rhythm before going for the big hits. Wide! Pushed for a single at point. Tucked off the pads to mid-wicket and a stellar fielding effort by Litton Das. FOUR! Slides down leg and Asalanka flicks it behind square.

SL 26/1 in 3 overs: SIX! Asalanka steps out to smash it over mid-wicket for a maximum. SIX! Another one goes the distance. Slog swept this time behind point. Keeps low next ball and nudged to mid-wicket for a couple. Off the backfoot for one at mid-on as Nasum finds his length again. Flicked away by Nissanka for a single.

SL 10/1 in 2 overs: Spin from both ends as Mahedi shares the new ball. FOUR! Nissanka slog sweeps and Shakib misfields at deep square leg to let through a boundary.

SL 4/1 in 1 over: Nasum opens the bowling with spin. Missed opportunity there as batters take a tight single. Poor throw at point. Perera off the mark on that iffy note. Nissanka follows with a single. OUT! Perera cleaned up. Goes for the slog sweep to the left-arm orthodox spinner and it turn it to crash into off-stump. Asalanka off the mark with one. Single to Nissanka to end the over.

Bangladesh will be mighty pleased with that batting performance. Now, it will have to strong start as the new ball will come on nicely to the bat initially. Getting the right line and lengths will be key.

BAN 171/4 in 20 overs: Chameera to bowl the last. Rahim gets cheeky and tries to lap it behind and misses. Driven on the off and a brace for Rahim. Cuts again but find the deep fielder this time; just one. FOUR! Full and Mahmudullah pierces the gap between point and cover. Pulled away for one. Rahim for the last ball. FOUR! Fitting end to an inventive innings by Rahim. Swivels and scoops it over the keeper as it runs away to a vacant fine leg.

BAN 159/4 in 19 overs: Kumara bowls out. Worked down leg for one and it's a fifty for Rahim. OUT! Sharp work from Kumara. Afif taps it right in front and calls for a run. Kumara sprints to the stumps before Afif to remove the bails. Umpire review find him just short. Mahmudullah in. Off the mark with a single. No-ball! Kumara throws a dangerous one almost knocking Rahim out. Perfect yorker on the free-hit but some good running means Bangladesh collects two. FOUR! Skipper drives it powerfully straight down the ground.

BAN 149/3 in 18 overs: Chameera with the ball. Rahim cuts again but deep point picks it up to keep it to one. FOUR! Copybook Rahim. Short and width outside off again and Rahim just guides it to backward point.

Full-toss on the legs and Afif shuffles to flick it fine.

BAN 129/2 in 16 overs: Shanaka back into the attack. FOUR! Naim gets lucky as he gets an edge on a miscued cut that runs between the keeper and third.

BAN 107/2 in 14 overs: Kumara continues. Confusion in the middle as Naim was left high and dry but survived after a missed direct hit. Good yorker lenghts by Kumara. FOUR! Misses the yorker this time and Naim pounces on it with a lusty blow straight. FOUR!

BAN 96/2 in 13 overs: Binura back with pace. SIX! Slower one on the stumps and Rahim clear his front foot to deposit it miles into the stands over square leg. BAN 72/2 in 10 overs: Karunaratne into his third over. A couple of twos off the first two deliveries. Flicked off the backfoot for one to square leg. One more for Rahim with a straight drive wide of mid-off. Fended straight to the bowler and he throws it back to the stumps as the ball bounces off to allow a single off the overthrow.

BAN 65/2 in 9 overs: Hasaranga replaces to Asalanka. Five singles and a brace from it. The batters are coming to terms with the leg-spinner as they work the ball off the backfoot.

BAN 58/2 in 8 overs: Karunaratne to bowl his second. Just one off the first three. OUT! Shakib departs. You would understandably need such a peach of a delivery to get the man in form out.  Shakib tries to make room to slog on leg but it swings in slightly, taking top of leg stump. Rahim in and off the mark with one with a slap square on the off.

BAN 55/1 in 7 overs: Pace-off as Asalanka comes in. FOUR! Shakib steps out to loft it over cover. Naim follows with two more fours. Cut powerfully off the backfoot on both occasions.

BAN 41/1 in 6 overs: Kumara to bowl the last of the powerplay overs. Perfectly-timed cover drive by Litton but a great dive at cover keeps it to one. Kumara keeps it very full outside off. Naim beaten on the first one and gets a slight edge on the second and scurries for a single. OUT! Litton Das steps out and tries to loft it over cover but doesn't get the elevation as the fielder jumps in time to pocket it. Things heat up between Litton and Kumara and the umpires have to play peacemaker. Shakib off the mark with one.

BAN 38/0 in 5 overs: Chameera continues. Litton collects one down the ground. Pulled away powerfully by Naim for a couple. FOUR! Litton shuffles across to off and waits for the slower ball before slashing it between point and cover. Good bouncer to end the over. Nine from it.

BAN 29/0 in 4 overs: Kumara replaces Binura. Full outside off and Naim just lifts it over square and they run hard for a three. A gentle dab by Litton to cover for a single. Kumara gets away with a full-toss as the yorker goes awry and Naim doesn't get it away. FOUR! Short this time and Naim slaps it over mid-on with disdain. Hit straight back to Kumara who throws it back at Naim...a little dangerously.

BAN 21/0 in 3 overs: Chameera to bowl. Litton collects one with a wristy nudge to mid-on. Tucked off the backfoot by Naim for a single at square leg. Litton opens the face this time to third and runs one. Decked in short as Naim ducks- that's one for the over. No-ball! Naim made to look room but Chameera followed the legs. Cramped for room and just gets two. That's another no-ball! Free-hit again. FOUR! Naim stayed put this time and put the yorker length away through mid-wicket. Naim retains strike with one. After just one off the first four, Chameera concedes 11 off the last two.

BAN 9/0 in 2 overs: BAN Left-armer Binura over the wicket to Liton. Starts off with two yorkers and well-defended by Litton. FOUR! Strays in his line and Litton just helps it past the keeper. Naim collects a brace with a drive through cover.

The 'Shakib Factor' will be key for the Tigers going into today's fixture

Sri Lanka will rely heavily on its bowling unit to make up for its relatively weak batting department, while Bangladesh would look for consistency when the two teams clash in a Super 12 Group 1 match of the T20 World Cup 2021 here on Sunday.

Both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh had to go through the first round group stage to secure their places in the Super 12s.

While Sri Lanka topped Group A with three wins out of as many games, Bangladesh finished second in Group B behind Scotland.

Sri Lanka defeated Namibia by seven wickets, before beating Ireland by 70 runs. In their last qualifying match against the Netherlands, they skittled out the opposition for 44 and then accumulated the runs with eight wickets in hand.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, were far from impressive. The Tigers were stunned by Scotland by six runs in their opener before they scrapped past Oman by 26 runs and then defeated Papua New Guinea by 84 runs to qualify for the Super 12s.
