It took Angelique Kerber 13 years on the professional circuit to win a Grand Slam, but it has taken her an extra month to be reunited with her Australian Open trophy, she revealed on Tuesday.

After her shock win over Serena Williams in Melbourne on January 30, the German star decided she did not want to carry the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup, which weighs 10 kilogrammes (22lbs), in her hand luggage on the long flight home.

Instead, the world number two opted to have it sent back to Europe by recorded delivery.

However that plan backfired as the 28-year-old lost track of exactly where it was after it got “stuck” in Poland’s capital, Warsaw, en route to her home address.

Finally though she has now located the cup and will soon be able to get her hands on the silver trophy.

“It’s stuck in Warsaw, but I hope to get it soon and I’m really looking forward to it,” said Kerber, who is in Doha.

The cup was named after Australia’s Daphne Akhurst, who won the women’s singles title at the Australian championships five times between 1925 and 1930.

She died in 1933, aged 29, from an ectopic pregnancy.
