Mirabai Chanu wins Sportstar of the Year (Female) at Sportstar Aces Awards 2023

The Manipur weightlifter had won the Sportswoman of the Year (Individual Sports) award – with boxer Lovlina Borgohain – in the previous edition of the awards.

Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won the Sportstar Aces Award for the Sportstar of the Year – Female – at the Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai on Monday.

This was her consecutive Aces Award in the same category. The Manipur girl had won the Sportswoman of the Year (Individual Sports) award – with boxer Lovlina Borgohain – in the previous edition of the awards.

In 2022, The Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Mirabai gave her best in some elite events even as she took care to stay fit.

Mirabai, 28, got back to her peak at the right time to total 201kg - one kg less than her Olympics showing a year ago - and won her second successive gold in the Commonwealth Games.

It was the third Commonwealth Games medal in a row for Mirabai, who landed a silver in 2014.

Mirabai bagged her maiden National Games gold in Gandhinagar and a World Championships silver (which was her second Worlds medal after her gold in 2017) in Bogota despite a wrist injury.

Legendary India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, former India hockey captain M. M. Somaya, chess great Viswanathan Anand, former India football skipper Bhaichung Bhutia, Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra, and Olympians Anjali Bhagwat and Aparna Popat are the members of the Sportstar Aces 2023 jury.
