Phil Salt’s explosive half-century helped Kolkata Knight Riders return to winning ways as the host recorded an emphatic seven-wicket win over Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League at the Eden Gardens here on Monday.

KKR rode on Varun Chakravarthy’s brilliant three-wicket haul to restrict DC to an 153 before overhauling the modest target to post its sixth win.

IPL 2024: Kolkata Knight Riders rubs ‘Salt’ on Delhi Capitals’ wounds, registers comfortable seven-wicket win

KKR rode on Varun Chakravarthy’s brilliant three-wicket haul to restrict DC to an 153 before overhauling the modest target to post its sixth win.

Rasikh back into the attack. Six!! Venkatesh finishes it off with a six over midwicket. Comfortable win for DC. Seven-wicket win for KKR, who stay second on table.

Dropped again, a tougher one though for Williams this time. Venkatesh looked to sweep and got a top-edge that went to deep square. Batters get a single. Venkatesh survives a run-out chance at the striker’s end, looked for a single after getting an outside edge, just managed to get back. Six!! A reverse sweep from Shreyas brings up the fifty parnership and takes KKR within touching distance. 

Axar with his last over. Four!! Shreyas cuts a slightly shorter one through third man for a boundary. Seven runs from the over. 

Kuldeep with his third. Shreyas and Venkatesh in no hurry, just the four runs from the over. 

Rasikh with his second. Four!! Venkatesh guides one to the offside sweeper but Williams makes a mess of it and it runs away for four. Shreyas gets an inside edge that runs to deep fine, a double taken. Yorker length on the stumps, Shreyas manages a single to cover. Nine runs from the over. 

Kuldeep back. Four!! Short from Kuldeep, Venkatesh pulls it through the gap in the legside to the boundary. Manages to sneak in a single after turning one to point. A double to deep mid to finish the over. 

Axar continues. Four!! Shreyas moves across and paddles one through fine leg for another boundary. Four!! Shreyas gets an outside edge that runs past a diving Kuldeep at third man and the ball runs away for a boundary. Nine of the over. 

Williams back into the attack. WICKET!! Top edge as Rinku looked to flick one onto the legside. Kuldeep completes the catch.

Venkatesh pulls one onto the legside to get a single. Almost a catch at short midwicket, just past the fielder’s grasp. A couple taken.

WICKET!! End of Salt’s innings, tries to cut a back of a length ball, sees the bails dislodged.

Kuldeep into the attack. Four!! Slightly short, Rinku plays it late and gets it past third man for four. Six!! In the slot, Salt lofts it over midwicket for another six. 

WICKET!!! First ball of Axar’s spell and he manages to remove Narine. Narine c Fraser-McGurk b Axar 15(10)

Rinku in at 3. Gets off the mark with a triple to deep square, thanks to an overthrow. Five runs from the over. 

Four!! Back of a length, Salt manages to punch it through a gap in the covers for a boundary. Six!! Fifty for Salt, in just 26 balls!! Was a fuller slow ball, Salt lofts it back over the bowler for six. Four!! Full toss outside off, gets Salt’s edge and it runs away past third man for a boundary. Four!! Another boundary and its 18 from the over. 

Rasikh into the attack. Four!! Slower ball outside off, Narine lofts it over cover for another boundary. Four!! Waist-high full toss, Narine gets it through point for another boundary. Short ball, Narine pulls to the left of long on for a single. Four!! Salt lofts a full one over cover to complete the third boundary of the over. 

Khaleel with a full toss, Narine swings it away for a single. Four!! Full to Salt, tries to loft it over cover, doesn’t get the best contact but manages to get it past the infield. Six runs from the over. 

Williams continues. Short ball, Salt doesn’t connect the pull. Six!! Fuller in length, Salt lofts it straight back down the ground for six. Six!! In the slot again, Salt lofts it over midwicket for another six. 13 off the over. 

Khaleel into the attack. Dropped!! Williams drops a skier, Salt survives. DC having a horrid start to the second innings. Salt pulls a slightly shorter one to midwicket for a couple. 

Salt and Narine walk out to open for KKR. Lizaad Williams with the new ball. 

Four!! On the pads first ball, flicked through fine leg for four. Williams gets one to move back into Narine. Williams has overstepped, Salt will face the free hit ball. Wide ball, free hit coming up again. Six!! On the pads, Salt lofts it over midwicket for a six. Four!! Fuller on offstump, creamed through cover for a boundary. Four!! Narine’s turn to send the ball to the fence, manages to connect the pull. 23 runs off the over. 

Four!! Russell into the attack. He goes short, gets Kuldeep’s attempted shot takes an edge that runs away to the boundary for four. Two chances for KKR to bring the innings to a close. Fell just short of Ramandeep who was running in, the batters try to sneak in a second and manage to complete it. Four!! Another edge and another boundary. Kuldeep manages to take DC to 153. 

Harshit continues. Short and wide, Kuldeep cuts to deep point for a single. WICKET!! Slower ball, foxes Rasikh who provides a simple catch to Shreyas at mid on.

Lizaad Williams in at 11. Gets off the mark with a single to deep midwicket. Four runs from the over. 

Vaibhav into the attack. Kuldeep manages to get a single after two dots. Yorker on the stumps, Rasikh manages to defend to the legside for another single. Appeals for lbw, not given by the umpire, KKR opt to review. Missing leg and Kuldeep survives. 

Harshit back into the attack. Gets one to move in and rap the pads of the batter. Inside edge saves Kuldeep after he is trapped in front. Back of a length on the pads, Kuldeep flicks to deep fine for a single. Four!! Rasikh attempts to open the face, gets an edge that runs past third man for four. 

Starc back into the attack. A slower ball fulltoss outside offstump, Rasikh misses his attempted drive. Rasikh gets off strike with a single to deep square. Six!! Starc goes short, Kuldeep top edges his pull and Harshit palms it over the boundary at deep square. Five wides as Starc sprays one down leg. Four!! Low fulltoss, Kuldeep flicks it through deep square for a boundary. 

Varun with his fourth over. Four!! Outside edge, just past the keeper and runs away to the boundary for four. WICKET!! Kushagra edges one back to Salt. The Impact Player doesn’t go to plan. 

Rasikh Dar in at 10. KKR review an lbw. Impact is outside off and KKR loses a review. Full on the pads, turned to long on for a single. 

Narine to bowl out. WICKET!! Axar was frustrated with the two dots, tries to rock back and punch it through the offside, only manages to edge it back on to the stumps.

Kuldeep in at 9. Four!! Gets off the mark with a lucky boundary through fine leg. 

Chakravarthy continues. WICKET!! Stubbs goes early, manages an edge the cut shot back to Salt. Second wicket for Chakravarthy.

Kumar Kushagra in as impact sub. Two runs from the over. 

Narine with his third. Two singles to start the over. A misfield from Rinku at cover hands Axar another single. Five runs from the over. 

Varun to continue. WICKET!! Pant miscues his lofted shot, goes straight up and Shreyas completes the catch.

Low full toss, Stubbs drives to long off for a single. Axar throws the kitchen sink, doesn’t connect though.

Arora comes in for his third over. He begin short and wide and this is fodder for Pant. It is sent to backward point boundary for FOUR. Axar then hits Arora for two back-to-back boundaries, one past third man and the other past backward point. The fielder nearby can just watch. 13 runs off the over in total. 

Varun Chakravarthy comes in. Goes straight into Pant who in trying to play it off the pads produces a big edge. It goes to Harshit Rana runs in from short third in time to catch it but has made a big mess of this. From the KKR dugout to the DC dugout, everyone’s gasping in shock for different reasons. Oh no. Harshit will be feeling the weight of the world on his shoulders and more importantly, the fiery glare of his head coach Chandu Pandit. Seven runs come off the over. 

Sunil Narine returns for his second. Chandu Pandit lauds the West Indian cricketer for his skill with the ball. He begins with a dot to Pant which gives him no room. Pant then runs two with the ball running away to long on. Venkatesh Iyer stops it in time from going to the rope. Pant then gets a single through cover point. Axar gets off the mark with a single. Pant then gets down on his knees looking to swat the ball, but ends up producing a top edge that lands behind the keeper. 

Harshit Rana to continue. From around the wicket this time. Single for Pant through deep cover. Then goes short which rises up on Porel. He has to work on reflexes here as he evades what was initially a pull shot. Harshit goes short again and Porel once again has no space. Dot ball. 

Chandrakant Pandit is speaking to the commentators and says, “At this stage, we will take any wicket. Any wicket at number 4 will put pressure on the opponent.” 

We’ve heard of commentator’s curse, is this coach’s manifestation? HARSHIT RANA TAKES OUT ABHISHEK POREL.

Harshit goes full and straight. Porel in trying to break free shuffles over and gets on his knees to paddle sweep the ball and play across the line. But he misses and the ball crashes into the stumps. Leg stump and middle stump are out of the ground. Excquisite sight this.

Just the one run conceded in this over. Chandu Pandit will be a happy man. Warner has come running in with some hydration and advice. 

Sunil Narine into the attack. Short outside off to begin. Cuts it straight to backward point. Narine stays short and Pant swats this away over deep midwicket for SIX. It makes him lose balance, as all that power goes into the velocity going into the ball. Narine bowls a length delivery between middle and off and Pant negotiates it for a single. Porel now gets one wide outside off and sends it to backward point. Narine straightens his length a bit and Porel manages to get a single through mid on. A single for Pant through midwicket to round off the over. Nine runs come off this Narine over and it’s time for a timeout. 

Harshit Rana into the attack. A dot ball to begin. Porel guides the ball over the keeper’s head for FOUR. Harshit then gifts him a delivery in the slot which Porel dispatches over extra cover for SIX. Oh another four! Harshit Rana is not able to find his rhythm here. Goes shorter this time, but it’s still got width and that’s all Porel needs. Harshit goes around the wicket now and angles one into Porel. Only a couple of singles managed to end the over. A big one for DC. 16 runs come off it.

Arora to continue from the other end. Single to start for Porel. He then opts for the bouncer and Shai Hope has managed to make a maximum of this. SIX RUNS. Hooked over fine leg in surprise. But Vaibhav Arora will have the last laugh as he leaves Hope’s stumps rattled off the next ball. Back of a length ball that goes a little towards off, ends up touching his bat and crashing into the stumps. Arora stares his victim away. His second wicket off the night. Nice to see those top of off and middle bail clips.

Skipper Rishabh Pant is out now with Porel. And he is greeted with a wide ball. Arora goes full and tempts Rishabh to play a shot. He’s driven it to extra cover for no dividend. A half volley off the last ball from Arora and Pant gives it the treatment it deserves, a four through cover point. 

Starc returns. Oooof what a yorker. Nicely chokes Fraser-McGurk for space. 143.8kmph that one. Squeezes it out behind square for a single. Abhiske Porel then plays the ball off his pads to backward square. It looks like it’s running away to the rope, but Ramandeep Singh saves his team a few runs. Nicely done. Just a single. Starc goes short now and is just what Fraser-McGurk wants. He has swatted this over midwicket for SIX. Starc strays again, this time wide outside off. Looks like a botched yorker this which then comes out as a full toss and it’s dispatched to the boundary by his compatriot. FOUR. Starc bowls into the slot again and Fraser-McGurk thumps the ball yet again, this time towards deep square leg. There’s a man there - Venkatesh Iyer who takes a very low catch. Has that been caught cleanly? YES IT HAS. Big breakthrough for KKR and big relief for Mitchell Starc as Fraser-McGurk makes his way back to the pavilion. He is not happy with himself, Fraser-McGurk.

Shai Hope joins Abhishek Porel and sees the over through safely. 

Vaibhav Arora to take charge at the other end. He begins with a no ball after overstepping. He’s swung this in and it looks like its headed beyond leg. Free hit for the big-hitting Aussie but Arora pulls it back with a yorker. A leg bye given. A dot ball follows. Vaibhav Arora sticks to that leg stump line and it looks like Prithvi Shaw has nicked the ball to the keeper. Phil Salt, and every single fielder is appealing. Umpire not interested. KKR reviews and is vindicated. Shaw’s walked a long while before the umpire changes his call. Breakthrough for DC.

Vaibhav Arora switches between length and fuller deliveries just going away from the batter but Porel negotiates it without risk. 

Prithvi Shaw and Jake Fraser-McGurk take guard for DC. Mitchell Starc starts for KKR. Starc goes well outside off and Shaw has dispatched this for a boundary through cover. Starc follows it up with a wide. He then tries to swing it back into Shaw’s bad. He plays it off the pads for four through midwicket. Starc remains full, Shaw meets the ball with the full face of the bat and sends it straight down. Mitchell Starc tries to intercept it with his left foot but he can’t stop it from running away to the boundary. Starc draws his length back a bit, Shaw flicks this to square leg and it’s just a single. A full toss from Starc now straight into the pads of JFM. Starc is appealing, but Shreyas thinks it’s copped some bat on it. Juicy start for DC.

Simon Katich calls the wicket, the same one used in the game against the Rajasthan Royals, a hard one. Perfect for batters, with the ball expected to come on nicely. Not a lot of dew is expected. We’re in for another run fest, if all the cards fall in place nicely.
