Serena Williams, 23-time Grand Slam winner, faces Danka Kovinic of Montenegro in the first round of women’s singles at 2022 US Open in New York on Monday.
While she has not explicitly said it, the American’s 21st US Open appearance is believed to be the last one of her career. Earlier this month, the 41-year-old Serena had said that she is “evolving away from tennis,” hinting at retirement from the sport.
Serena had made her Grand Slam debut at the age of 16 at the 1998 Australian Open, where she lost to her elder sister Venus in the second round. However, with her power game and tactical nous, Serena went on to become arguably the greatest female tennis player ever. In terms of numbers, Serena is only one behind Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 majors.
Serena Williams’ singles career in numbers
- Singles titles - 73
- Grand Slam singles titles - 23 (Australian Open - 7, French Open - 3, Wimbledon - 7, US Open - 6)
- Singles win-loss record: 856-155
- 1st singles title - WTA500 Paris (1999)
- Last singles title - WTA250 Auckland (2020)
Her last Grand Slam title though came at the 2017 Australian Open. She returned to action at Wimbledon in June after a year-long absence from competition and lost to Frenchwoman Harmony Tan in the first round. Since then, she has played in Toronto and Cincinnati.
